Courses: Instructors & Attendees Dr. Bashford Dean led the first course at Cold Spring Harbor in 1890, but the modern era began in 1945 with the Phage course, established by Max Delbrück and Salvador Luria. The Courses have had an enormous impact on research, introducing thousands of scientists to new topics. What courses did you participate in and how were they memorable?

Default 1951 Phage Course Graduation

The graduation exercises, which were customary at 'P.U.' (the very unofficial Phage University), at the end of the 1951 Phage Course, were a real riot... There was a customary party, including an Eve with not much more than a live Texas boa snake, and even a cancan show.

Default In Memorium

The august faculty and dignitaries pictured at the P.U. graduation ceremony are Hotchkiss, Steinberg, Luria, Stahl, and Hershey. This I.D. is made by the sole survivor.

Default Good picture, wrong date

I (Frank) set foot in CSH for the first time in 1952. The photo above cannot be from the 1951 graduation.
