Permission and Copyright Policies
The user agrees to give proper acknowledgement to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Archives (CSHL Archives) and further agrees to secure permission in advance from the CSHL Archives to publish or broadcast any item, in whole or in part, from its collections. This permission may be granted in so far and only in so far as the rights of the CSHL Archives are concerned.
The user agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Archives, its officers, employees and agents from and against all suits, claims, actions and expenses arising out of the use of reproductions provided by the CSHL Archives.
The CSHL Archives claims only physical ownership of most archival material. Persons wishing to publish or broadcast this material must assume all responsibility for identifying and satisfying any claimants of copyrights.
United States Copyright Law
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
The CSHL Archives reserves the right to refuse to accept a duplication request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request would involve violation of copyright law. Copyright law protects unpublished as well as published materials.
